How to build a room you love — one considered step at a time.
There’s an old saying we’re rather fond of: where there’s a will, there’s a way. When it comes to furnishing a home, that’s exactly the spirit we believe in. You don’t have to do everything at once, and you certainly don’t have to do it all in one go. The best rooms are usually built up over time — piece by piece, your way.
So we’re starting a little series. Room by room, we’ll walk through how we’d approach a space: what to buy first, what can wait, and how to make it feel like home without rushing. First up, the room most of us spend the most time in — the living room.
Start with the piece you’ll use most
Every room has an anchor. In the living room, it’s almost always the sofa. It’s the thing you’ll sit on every evening, the piece the rest of the room arranges itself around, and the one worth getting right. Before anything else, think about how you actually live: do you stretch out, curl up, or pack the family in on a Friday night? Comfort first, colour second.
A good sofa is an investment, and there’s no shame in spreading the cost of one over time rather than settling for something you don’t love. Furnishing your home shouldn’t mean stretching yourself thin — it should fit your budget, not the other way around.
Build outwards, not all at once
Once the anchor’s in place, the rest can follow at its own pace. A coffee table, a lamp for the corner that always feels too dark, a rug to pull it together. There’s no prize for finishing in a weekend. In fact, the rooms that feel most personal are usually the ones that came together slowly, as you worked out what you actually needed.

- A rug — defines the space and softens hard floors
- Storage — a sideboard or shelving to keep clutter at bay
- The finishing touches — cushions, throws, a bit of greenery
Make it yours, not a showroom
It’s tempting to copy a picture wholesale, but the homes that feel best are the ones that look lived in. Mix the new with what you already own. Let the room tell your story — the books you actually read, the photos that matter, the chair that’s seen better days but you can’t quite part with. There’s no wrong way to do this when it’s your home.
