The room that does the most for you — so it’s worth getting the basics right.
Last time, we made a start on the living room — the piece you use most, built outwards at your own pace. This time we’re heading somewhere quieter, and arguably more important: the bedroom. It’s the first room you see each morning and the last each night, yet it’s often the one that gets furnished last, with whatever’s left over. We’d gently suggest doing it the other way round.
You don’t have to spend a fortune, and you don’t have to do it all at once. As ever, there’s a way to build the room you want, one considered step at a time.
Start with sleep
The bed is the anchor here, in every sense. A decent mattress and a frame that suits how you sleep will do more for your day-to-day than any cushion or curtain ever could. It’s the one place we’d always say to prioritise comfort over looks — though happily, you rarely have to choose between the two.
Like the sofa in the living room, a good bed is worth getting right rather than rushing. Spreading the cost over time, subject to status, can make the difference between settling and choosing something you’ll be glad of every night for years.
Build outwards, calmly
Once you’re sleeping well, the rest can follow at its own pace. The bedroom rewards restraint — it’s a room for winding down, so there’s no need to fill every corner. Here’s the order we’d work in:
- The bed — frame and mattress, your biggest comfort decision
- Bedside storage — somewhere for the lamp, the book, the phone
- A wardrobe or chest of drawers — calm comes from having a home for everything
- Soft lighting — a bedside lamp beats a harsh overhead light every time
- The finishing touches — bedding you love, a rug underfoot, a little greenery
Make it a room for rest
The best bedrooms feel calm, and calm usually comes from less, not more. Keep surfaces clear, give clutter somewhere to live, and choose a few things you genuinely love over a lot you only half do. It’s your retreat — there’s no wrong way to make it feel like yours.
The takeaway
Get the sleep right first, then build the calm around it, in your own time. The bedroom doesn’t need to be finished to be restful — it just needs the basics done well. And whatever you’ve got your heart set on, there’s always a way to get there.
